When Bill Clinton starts talking about things happening in Elephant and Castle, you starting wondering if he lost his way somewhere in London and ended up wandering the streets of Elephant looking for the Savoy, when he actually stumbled upon Best Kebab. It isn't the news however of how good London's Kebab shops can be, but is really the news that Clinton recently told the BBC he has "seen the future"...and it's Elephant and Castle.
Clinton was of course commenting on the new £1.5 billion redevelopment that will be happening to Elephant over the next 5 years, which includes a brand new 43 story-tower. The development has caught the attention of the former US President because the plans are all built upon the focus of becoming more environmentally friendly, by using less carbon emissions. Clinton see's the development plans as a model all other cities can follow. He said "If you can do a carbon positive development that big, then no-one in the world will have any reason not to do it".
At the heart of the redevelopment is the 43 story-tower, going to be called "Eileen House", which will become home for 369 flats and stand at 137.5m high (...or bloody tall in layman's terms). The development will also include building a smaller brother to the tower, and also revamping the town centre, market square and creating thousands of other homes.
It would appear Elephant is finally going to get its Castle.
